Salome is a genre of Venetian masquerade masks that are derived from the ladies of Cinquecento (the period of Titian), who covered themselves in jewels, expensive clothing and elaborate coifs.  Today, these masks are popular in the Venice Carnival.

This mask features a large hand painted scene of the Rialto Bridge in Venice, one of the iconic tourist attractions in Venice.  The boundaries of the mask have been gilded in a lovely gold relief pattern and the base of the mask has been decorated with the 'craquele' effect which looks like crazed enamel on pottery.  The face of the mask has a lace border above the eyes and the remainder is decorated in gold relief.
