This is a very traditional Venetian masquerade mask, with the shape of mask worn in the ancient Venetian theatre of the Commedia dell'Arte. This 'Nasone' mask was worn by a character from the Commedia dell'arte theatre, Canpitano. This theatre, was very popular from 16th to the 18 centuries in Venice and elsewhere in Europe.
The character of 'Il Capitano' was usually a soldier, dressed in a brightly colored uniform. His part usually involves him boasting of great exploits of war and he is often the subject of pranks and jokes from other characters in the Commedia dell'Arte.
The mask is beautifully hand decorated with a gold relief pattern and the chequered design is like a chess board. It includes colours of red, antique cream, black and s piece of music score right above the over emphasized nose.
This Venetian mask is a great mask to wear to a masquerade ball or masked party and will bring some of the genuine charm of ancient Venice. After the event this mask will also be a lovely ornament for your home.
The mask measures 18cm from the top of the mask to the end of the nose and 16cm wide.
