Zanni is a character in the Commedia dell'Arte theatre of the 17th Century and his character was that of a comic servant. It is thought that his name was derived from Giovanni, a typical name of servants from that time that had emigrated to Venice in search of work from the valleys around Bergamo in Northern Italy.
