A genuine traditional Venetian masquerade mask in the historic Pulcinella design.
Pulcinella was a character from the Commedia dell'arte theatre, which was very popular from 16th to the 18 centuries in Venice and elsewhere in Europe. This Venetian masquerade mask is a great option for a man to wear to a masquerade ball or masked event. It has tapes on either side of the mask to attach it to your head and you will look great in this very traditional Venetian mask.In this instance, the artisan has included a commentary on the mask where one of the tapes is attached to the inside of the mask as shown on the last image. This is all in Italian and it states all the materials that have been used in the manufacture of the mask.
The Pulcinella Commedia dell'arte character started out as an idiot simpleton servant, like Arlecchino, but developed into a very complex figure. He is resigned to his destiny as a poor and ugly hunchback, but is also a romantic, love-struck and often witty character, full of common sense. He became a feature of theatrical performances only in the south of Italy, but remained a very important figure in the Venice Carnival (Carnevale). The name probably derives from "pulcino" ("chick") and he did in fact, speak with a sort of a "cheeping" voice.
