Salome is a genre of masks that are derived from the ladies of Cinquecento (the period of Titian), who covered themselves in jewels, expensive clothing and elaborate coifs.  Today, these masks are popular in the Venice Carnival.

This Venetian masquerade mask features a large graphic of the Grand Canal in Venice, looking across toward St Marks Square, with the Doge's Palace in the background. It covers a day of festivities where a royal gondola is progressing up the canal. It is an amazing scene with normal life in the foreground, seemingly paying no attention to the spectacle behind them.

The borders of the mask is lavishly decorated in a deep gold relief pattern finished with a double edging of gold braid.  The face of the mask and the image has been treated with the 'craquele' effect, much like crazed china to look amazing.
